THE PRACTICE

Dr. Ortiz graduated from Yale University and the Icahn Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She originally planned to become a radiologist and completed and internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia University and one year of radiology residency at Mount Sinai. She changed course to do a residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics at Stanford University and a subspecialty Fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Harvard, The Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. While at Stanford and Harvard she was trained by leaders in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and molecular biology, giving her a deep understanding of cancer evolution and laparoscopic surgery. She was recruited as attending Gynecologic Oncologist at Florida Cancer Institute in Orlando, where matured into a skilled surgeon at the cutting edge of surgical and chemotherapeutic innovation. She performed her first robotic surgery in 2006, months after it was  first FDA approved for use in women. After successful completion of her Board Examinations in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Gynecologic Oncology, she relocated to Long Island to be closer to family and friends. Here, she recognized a tremendous gap in women’s health care on Eastern Long Island. Sound Gynecologic Oncology, PLLC was founded to fill that gap.

Since 2007, Dr. Beverly Ortiz has amassed a track record of outstanding surgical outcomes, innovation and meaningful, enduring quality of life for her patients. In addition to awards received in Florida, Long Island has recognized her medical leadership and innovation with Long Island’s Top 50 Women in Business, Brookhaven Town’s Outstanding Service to the Community in Medicine and others. In 2010 Dr. Ortiz performed the first robotic surgery ever at a Suffolk County Community Hospital. Robotic surgery has since become a nation-wide surgical standard in multiple specialties. In 2019 Dr. Ortiz introduced a new surgical technique for intraoperative identification and protection of the ureter during complex gynecologic surgery. Her data and technique were accepted internationally and have been presented in Dublin at the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, in Taipei at the Asian Society of Gynecologic Oncology and in Nashville at the American Society of Gynecologic Laparoscopy meetings.

The Practice is open to patients with women’s cancer and complex surgical issues such as uterine, ovarian, cervical, vulvar and vaginal cancers, HPV-related precancerous conditions.  Surgical treatment of benign conditions such as complex pelvic masses, advanced endometriosis, uterine fibroids and adhesions is within the scope of the practice. Dr. Ortiz performs in-office ultrasound and interprets the results immediately. She and her team at Sound Gynecologic Oncology, PLLC work hard to get patient information so that every consultation is well-informed and thorough. The goal is always the same: compassionate, uncompromising highest quality healthcare for women.
